In consultation with and with support from the Dean and the School, and consistent with the mission, strategic directions and policies and procedures of the University and the Faculty, the Head of School should:

Planning and Leadership

  • determine the School's strategic direction to complement the strategic direction of the Faculty and the mission of the University
  • manage the School to achieve the strategic direction of the School and Faculty and complement the mission of the University
  • ensure the School is appropriately marketed and represented to key individuals and groups
  • contribute to the ongoing development and administration of the Faculty and the University
  • ensure a fair, safe and harassment free work and study environment in accordance with UNSW policies and state and federal legislative requirements
Academic

  • promote excellence in teaching and research
  • plan and implement course and subject offerings
  • organise and oversee postgraduate training and supervision
  • conduct regular reviews of the courses and subjects taught in the School, including examination of integrating mechanisms with other Schools and/or Faculties
  • ensure that the education and learning of all students is maximised
Financial

  • plan and manage the School's financial resources efficiently and in accordance with University policies and relevant legislation
  • maximise opportunities for and success in raising funds from appropriate sources outside the University
  • collaborate wherever possible with other Schools to ensure efficient use of University resources
Personnel

  • identify, assess and control risks to health and safety of staff, students and visitors, and ensure that an OH&S system is developed documented and followed by staff and students through appropriate training, supervision and monitoring
  • maintain plans for the staffing needs of the School
  • ensure administrative efficiency and effectiveness and compliance with University policies and relevant legislation, including industrial, OH&S and EEO
  • determine core functions for each position in the School
  • ensure reviews of performance and assessment of developmental needs of staff in the School are undertaken in accordance with University policy, including the Career Development Scheme
  • ensure timely and effective communication with staff and students
  • ensure support, counselling and mentoring of staff as appropriate
Physical Resources

  • ensure the physical resources of the School are utilised effectively and efficiently, and mechanisms for promoting integration with other Schools are exploited to the maximum benefit of the School, Faculty and the University
  • ensure that the School has plans for regular maintenance and upgrading of equipment and physical facilities to ensure the School meets its strategic direction efficiently.
