Non-residents of Australia are only able to take up employment at UNSW with a valid visa issued by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA). The visas allowing full-time employment are:

  • Permanent Residence Visa, for employment of three years or more
  • Temporary Residence Subclass 418 (educational) Visa, for employment of a period up to two years (DIMA allows subsequent sponsorship for this type of visa)

The University is required to sponsor pending employees who apply for permanent or temporary residence.

Sponsorship by the University

In line with Immigration Regulations provided by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA), the University will provide the following sponsorship arrangement:

  • For contracts of employment of up to two years, the University will sponsor a Temporary Residence Subclass 418 Visa (Educational).
  • or appointments of three years or more the University will sponsor a Permanent Residence application. The University can regard the costs associated with the employee's permanent residency application as a "relocation" expense and hence, may reimburse the employee accordingly.

Note: The time taken to issue a visa is often quite lengthy. The University may support an application for temporary residence for an appointee to a position of three years or more to enable the appointee to commence duty whilst preparations are made for a permanent residence application.

In all but the following cases the University will sponsor once only a Temporary Residence Subclass 418 Visa (Educational). Where it is intended that the appointment will be for a three year period alone and the employee clearly intends to return to his/her country of origin the employee will have the choice of a Temporary Residence Subclass 418 Visa (Educational) to cover that period only, or a Permanent Residence application.
