Academic Women in Leadership Program

The Academic Women in Leadership Program commenced in 2006 and is endorsed by the Senior Executive Team. The program aims to support academic women in achieving an increased representation in higher level academic appointments and decision making bodies at UNSW.

The program also seeks to support:

  • women as role models for other staff and students
  • a culture of gender inclusive leadership in senior management and decision-making, acknowledging diversity among women
For the participants, the program provides women with the opportunity, skills and insight into leadership that will foster their talents and help them find the highest level of fulfilment in leadership roles in the university. In particular, participants will:

  • gain knowledge and experience of the practice, systems and structures of the university.
  • understand their individual styles of leadership
  • develop the skills of leading and managing within a diverse community
Program Content

The program content addresses the qualities of effective leadership and the challenges of effecting cultural change to create a more diverse and inclusive leadership culture at UNSW.

It provides each participant with the opportunity to understand the way in which personal style influences management and leadership. This understanding will maximise effectiveness both personally and professionally and develop confidence in the role.

The program focuses on the unique cultural environment of the University. It provides information and discussion about the strategic mission of the University. It offers the opportunity for participants to position themselves more strategically within the university and develop meaningful networks both internally and externally.
