UNSW is dedicated to supporting career development for all staff.    myCAREER has been developed to bring together a range of career related services, programs and tools provided by OSDS.
 
Traditionally, career progression has followed a linear path up a vertical ladder within the one organisation.   In today's rapidly changing environment career progression is more likely to involve many lateral moves across many different organisations and professions. 
 
This contemporary career path means there are a vast number of opportunities available to you.  You may decide to expand your work in your current position, take a sideways move, seek project work, change Faculties or Divisions to a similar role, shift to a totally new field within the university or explore opportunities in different organisations.
 
Although managing your career in this environment can appear daunting and complex, actively managing your career using a structured career planning process can lead to effective career decisions.  The myCAREER package of services, programs and tools can assist you in managing your career.

Know Yourself - Self Assessment
 
Clarifying what you want in a career and evaluating your interests, skills and values will assist you to actively manage your career and lead to effective career decisions.  Taking time to assess yourself and review your career to date will increase your confidence in career decisions, help you identify your core strengths and lead to exploration of options you may not have otherwise considered.This is the first step in an effective career planning process.

Explore Options
The second stage of effective career planning is to explore your options.  At any point in your career you have many options from which to choose.  For example, you could choose to
 
1.      Stay in your current position
2.      Enrich your current position by including other job tasks
3.      Seek promotion
4.      Take a short term project or secondment
5.      Move sideways to a new job at a similar level
6.      Move down to a position of less responsibility
7.      Seek the same sort of job in a new work unit or location
8.      Change career fields
9.      Create a totally new job by submitting a proposal to your work unit or external employer
10. Change employers
