Academic Promotion Preparation Series

What is the series about?
The following programs have been designed to support promotion applicants, and Faculty Committee members in the academic promotions process. UNSW acknowledges the importance of this process to individual applicants, and is committed to ensuring that staff are empowered with the necessary knowledge and skill to maximise their chance of success. Sessions are conducted specifically for each group: Promotion to Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor and Professor. They are scheduled for delivery just prior to the commencement of each promotions round.
 
Sessions are also conducted for new and existing Faculty Promotions Committee members, who play a significant role in the success of the process. Information will be provided to ensure successful engagement in the selection process.
 
Sessions involve key experts from across UNSW who have recent relevant experience with the academic promotion process.

Applicant Information Sessions

What is the workshop about?
This session will introduce the 2009 UNSW Academic Promotions process, and will provide an opportunity for participants to raise questions and discuss answers to write the application with confidence.
 
 
What will I learn?
  • Information on the 2009 revisions to the policy and procedures
  • Key steps in the academic promotion process, roles and responsibilities including the decision making process
  • What to consider when choosing your referees
  • Answers to frequently asked questions
  • Helpful hints in planning your approach
 
 
What will I be able to do at the end of the course?
  • Identify the key changes in the 2009 UNSW academic promotions policy
  • Describe the decision making process
  • Describe the steps involved in preparing your application for promotion
  • Choose appropriate referees
 
 
Suitable For: Academic staff who are intending to apply for Academic Promotion in 2009. Sessions are conducted specifically for each level of promotion: Promotion to Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor and Professor.

Writing Your Application

What is the course about?
 
This session is designed to assist applicants for academic promotion with the process of writing their application with an emphasis on the Research and Teaching components of the application.
 
What will I learn?
 
  • Helpful hints and advice from previous successful applicants in respect to writing a promotion application
  • Identifying key elements of an effective written application
  • What makes an effective promotion application from the perspective of either current or former Faculty Promotion Committee Members
 
What will I be able to do at the end of the course?
 
  • Have an awareness of what constitutes an effective written promotion application
  • Identify strategies for writing an effective promotion application
  • Have an understanding of how Faculty Promotion Committees assess the written application.

Interview Skills Workshop for Promotion Applicants

 
Part One: Information, Tips and Techniques
 
What is the course about?
Whilst the policy and procedure may change, some things like having to attend an interview (and wishing you didn't... do not! This session is designed to provide an opportunity to meet with peers; share strategies and get questions answered. A guest presenter who has recently and successfully been through the process will share their experience about what works, what doesn't, and lessons learnt.
 
 
What will I learn?
  • The Interview Process: What happens and when - the mechanics & the decision making process
  • Interview Questions and Answers: What might be asked and what characterises an effective response.
  • Interview Skills and Presentation: Verbal and non verbal communication
 
What will I be able to do at the end of the course?
  • Describe the interview process
  • State the role of the interview in the Academic Promotions decision making process
  • Describe the nature of the questions that may be asked by the selection committee
  • Increase knowledge of the behaviors which will result in a successful interview outcome
  • Recognise behaviors which will reduce the opportunity for a successful interview outcome
 
 
Suitable For: Academic staff who are intending to apply for Academic Promotion in 2008. Sessions are conducted specifically for each level of promotion: Promotion to Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor and Professor.

Part Two: The Mock Interview: Applying Theory to Practice
 
What is the course about?
This is an opportunity to practice answering questions from an experienced panel and receive feedback and advice regarding individual interview presentation style and delivery.
 
Each participant must invest 30 minutes in a schedule that is designed immediately after the Part One Information Session.
 
 
What will I learn?
  • What your answers sound like to others
  • What it is like to be in an interview environment (albeit simulated)
  • You interview strengths and areas to develop as identified by the Panel
  • Reflect on just how prepared you really are for the interview
 
 
What will I be able to do at the end of the course?
  • Receive constructive feedback on your interview strengths and identify areas to develop
  • Increase your chances of success in what is an important personal and professional journey
 
Suitable For: The Mock Interview session is only available to all staff applying for UNSW Academic Promotion in 2009. Sessions are conducted specifically for each level of promotion: Promotion to Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor and Professor.
