Career Development Scheme

What is the series about?
The objectives of the UNSW Career Development Scheme are to:
  • Provide a mechanism for identification of development needs for current and future career opportunities
  • Assist staff to develop to their full potential
  • Align individual development & career goals with UNSW strategic directions
  • Provide constructive feedback, recognition and support
  • Provide access to development opportunities
  • Identify progress toward achievement of agreed goals
 
 
What does the series include?
In order to support the implementation of the Career Development Scheme, OSDS provides two information sessions, one for supervisors and one for staff.  We recommend all UNSW staff attend their relevant session to ensure a thorough understanding of the Career Development Scheme is gained.


Career Development Scheme - Staff Information Session

What is the course about?
The CDS is the UNSW's workplace planning and career development tool. This workshop is designed to prepare staff members for participation in the CDS. In the workshop you will complete practical exercises that will assist you to complete CDS documentation in preparation for the CDS discussion with your Supervisor.
 
 
What will I learn?
  • The benefits of the CDS
  • The benefits of effective workplace planning
  • How to identify development opportunities
  • Basic career management techniques
 
 
What will I be able to do at the end of the course?
  • Utilise the CDS process
  • Assess your own development needs
  • Write effective work priorities and development goals
  • Identify your responsibilities in managing your own career

Career Development Scheme - Supervisor Information Session

What is the course about?
The CDS is the UNSW's workplace planning and career development tool. It is critical that supervisors and managers understand the tool, and their role in facilitating CDS discussion with their staff. This mandatory course will outline both your responsibilities and those of your staff at each stage CDS cycle.
 
 
What will I learn?
  • The benefits of using the CDS
  • How to implement the scheme in your work area
 
 
What will I be able to do at the end of the course?
  • Discuss responsibilities regarding implementation of the CDS in a work unit
  • Consider the relationship between CDS and related Human Resources policies and processes
  • Identify appropriate documentation for use in the CDS process
  • Recognise principles required to manage the CDS process
  • Analyse barriers to successful implementation of the CDS in a work unit
