Performance Development Scheme

Performance Development Training For Managers

This one day workshop has been designed to provide the necessary knowledge and skill enhancement to facilitate the successful implementation of the Performance Development Scheme at UNSW. For those staff who decide that they require further learning, a number of complementary workshops are available in the Management in Action Series-The Manager as Coach, Implementing Operational Plans and Planning for Staff Development.

  • How to write a Key Performance Target using the SMART framework
  • Strategies to engage the team in the Performance Development Scheme
  • How to prepare for and structure a performance conversation
  • How to conduct a difficult conversation
  • How to design and develop a learning and development plan
  • How to apply motivational theories to develop appropriate incentives and rewards for staff.

  • Analyse individual and team learning and development needs
  • Coach staff to develop Performance Development Targets and Measures
  • Conduct an effective Performance Development conversation which supports and encourages staff

Writing Key Performance Targets

Prerequisite Knowledge: UNSW Performance Development scheme procedures and processes

Suitable For: All Professional & Technical Managers and Staff, and Academic Managers of Professional & Technical Staff: We encourage you to come with other members of your team, or individually.

What is the Course About?
The conversation that managers and staff have about performance planning and delivery is crucial to the success of UNSW and must be based on quality Key Performance Targets (KPTs). This 3 hour skill based workshop has been designed to help staff translate the UNSW strategic and operational plans into SMART Key Performance Targets.  This is a practical workshop which introduces you to the key principles of how to write a Key Performance Target and includes a practice session.

  • How to identify the areas that matter most to your success and that of your work unit
  • How to create a KPT using strategic and operational plans
  • How to use a framework to help in developing KPTs
  • How to write a KPT using the SMART framework
  • Practice writing a performance target
  • How to confidently explain and discuss your KPTs

Key Learning Outcomes
  • Identify the key areas that have the most impact on your performance
  • Align your KPTs with organisational objectives
  • Develop KPTs using the SMART framework
  • Increase confidence in both writing and discussing KPTs
