What is Universitas 21?
Universitas 21 (U21) is an international network of 17 comprehensive, research-intensive universities in 10 countries. Established in 1997, U21 is capable of achieving the kind of practical outcomes that none of the individual members would be able to achieve independently or through traditional bilateral alliances. The aim of Universitas 21 is to facilitate interchange between members. It provides a framework for international collaboration, capitalising on the established reputation and operational reach of each of its members.
Collectively, its members enrol about 500,000 students, employ some 44,000 academics and researchers, provide over 700,000 Internet addresses, have over 2 million alumni, and have a combined operating budget of about $US9.5 billion.
U21 members share a common conviction that an international orientation is critically important, and extremely influential, in shaping and transforming values, agendas and priorities at all levels. A truly international university is open to the world in many ways including:
- the people it attracts
- the ideas and values it embraces
- the curricula it designs and delivers
- the skills, understanding and professional horizons of its graduates
- the standards it sets and monitors and
- the audiences who access its scholarship, research and creativity.
Universitas 21 is a network of international research-intensive universities. Its goals are:
- Sharing of best practice in teaching, research and administration
- Cooperation in developing new teaching and learning technologies
- Mutual recognition of courses and curricula
- Staff and student mobility
- Benchmarking
The goals of the UNSW Universitas 21 Fellowship Program are:
- Provide high-quality development opportunities for UNSW staff members
- Develop and strengthen links between UNSW and the other Universitas 21 member universities
- Gain knowledge about teaching and administrative practices at the other Universitas 21 universities.
About the U21 Fellowship
