Tigger's Place Child Care Centre Philosophy
Tigger's Place Child Care Centre is a nurturing community made up of children, families and staff which is both part of and supported by UNSW, and the wider community. We recognise that teaching and learning have taken place on this land for millions of years. We are honoured to be continuing with this tradition and are committed to acknowledging the Cadigal people of the Eora Nation as the original owners of the land.
We believe an active learning process can assist children to construct their own knowledge and understanding through learning at their own pace, building on their strengths, and following their interests. This process may be directed by children and acknowledges the process itself as of major importance. The centre intends to provide an enjoyable and challenging learning environment where children are encouraged to learn through play and where, through their successes we create the foundations that encourage and excite the children to continue on their journey of life long learning. We recognise the importance of listening to the children to better understand their needs, interests and the contribution they make to their families, the Centre and the community.
We believe that we have a responsibility to work, teach and play in a manner that is respectful of the delicacy of the natural environment.
We acknowledge that each child is part of a family that includes all adults and children who have significant relationships with that child and respect the family as the primary caregiver. We believe it is important to compliment and support the role of the family in the child's life by working together in partnership. We value family input into decision-making and intend to draw upon that to improve the quality of the Centre.
We value the diversity within Australian society and actively engage in discussions and experiences with children that aim to respect that diversity and challenge stereotypes and biases. Children will be introduced to a wide range of social and cultural experiences, family types, and abilities so that they may learn from diversity that there is a variety of possibilities. We aim to develop resilience amongst the children and to assist them to reach their full potential as a member of society. Tigger's Place recognises the importance of providing an anti-bias approach to positively support children's growth of identity, self esteem and critical thinking.
We believe that an effective environment requires respect for and a way to share and utilise the interests , skills and resources of each staff member. In recognition of the diversity of backgrounds and experience amongst staff, we acknowledge the importance of working as a team to provide high quality care and education. We value and support staff input into decision making, continued professional development and the role staff play as advocates for the wider field of early childhood education.
