Clause 16.0(d) of the UNSW (Academic Staff) Enterprise Agreement 2006 (the Academic Agreement) states that:
A research only employee will be appointed at a level at least consistent with the "Guidelines for Appointment of Academic Research Staff" which were in place on the day before the commencement of the Agreement.
The above guidelines are contained in Schedule 6 of the UNSW (Academic Staff) Enterprise Agreement 2003.  A copy of the guidelines can be obtained by clicking here.
 
Categories of research staff listed in clause 1 of Schedule 6 will be recognised as academics. Other research positions will be considered academic if they meet any one of the four criteria below. These staff will therefore be covered by the terms of the academic Agreement and be entitled to the conditions of employment enjoyed by academic staff.
 
Otherwise, research positions such as Research Assistants, Research Officers, or Senior Research Officers will be designated general staff positions and covered by general staff conditions of employment.
 
Criteria for status as academic research staff
 
One of the following criteria should be met for an employee undertaking research only duties to be appointed as a member of academic staff. The person:
  • must have primary or significant responsibility for leading a research project/s provided that, in the case of a Level A academic research appointment, the conduct of research may be under limited supervision either as a member of a team or independently and the academic demonstrates intellectual contribution to research as is the norm of the discipline;
  • must have received his or her Fellowship through a rigorous selection process;
  • is regarded internationally or nationally as an expert in his or her field of study or research;or
  • is otherwise recognised as occupying an academic research position by the University.
Titles of academic research staff
 
Academic research staff will have titles according to their standing against the usual academic levels A to E as follows:
