Internal vs External Advertising

INTERNAL RECRUITMENT

 Advantages
 Disadvantages
  • Organisation has better knowledge of applicant strengths/weaknesses
  • Applicant is already familiar with organisation
  • Organisation increases its return on investment in training & development
  • Allows organisation to exercise succession planning and can generate promotions
  • Staff morale and motivation is enhanced
  • Organisation only needs to hire at entry-level positions
  • Competition for promotions among staff can affect morale
  • Sometimes staff may be promoted above their level of competence
  • Can create a "stagnant" workforce lacking creativity and innovation
  • Applicants may be given false expectations

EXTERNAL RECRUITMENT

 Advantages
 Disadvantages
  • Larger talent pool to choose from
  • Offers the organisation new skills, insights, and know-how
  • Can effectively change the 'culture' of a work unit/area
  • Allows an organisation to seek "specialist" expertise in a particular field
  • New employees are not part of existing cliques and therefore, join the organisation unaffected by internal politics
  • Allows an organisation to undertake labour-market testing to ensure it is employing the best possible candidates
  • Cost of recruitment
  • Time taken to recruit
  • Loss of productivity of existing staff involved in the candidate search process
  • Attracting and selecting new employees may be more difficult
  • New staff require time to adjust and "fit-in" to the organisation before they are fully productive
  • Morale may be affected due to existing staff being passed over for the opportunity
  • Greater reliance on interview performance and referees reports = risk of poor applicant selection
  • Employee "fit" may not match the organisations/work unit's

Hard Copy vs Electronic Advertising

Since 1999, electronic or website advertising has proved to be a successful and cost-effective means of recruitment advertising. Most newspapers and journals now have their own websites and charge a minimal fee for advertising.

The advantages of internet advertising are:
  • functions as a complimentary or alternative medium to traditional advertising
  • improves the effectiveness and efficiency of recruitment advertising
  • allows for 'targetted' advertising to capture a specific audience
  • dynamically changes the way ads are presented
  • fraction of cost
  • faster communication
  • global marketing - potential to reach broader national/international labour markets
  • holistic approach for employers/employees
The disadvantages of internet advertising are:
  • whilst national websites like Mycareer.com and Seek.com are very popular and generate a lot of interest, careful monitoring has shown that we get quantity rather than quality of applications.
  • applicants who are not familiar with merit based selection, do not address the selection criteria,
nor do the templates on these websites allow customisation so that applicants address the criteria in their application.
Specialist national/international websites can be used for advertising senior, academic or research positions. Over the last two years statistics have shown that the most successful applicants came from advertisements placed on the HR website.

Note: The Department of Immigration & Multicultural & Indigenous Affairs (DIMA) require UNSW to provide documentary evidence of having tested the labour market in Australia by advertising nationally before nominating an overseas employee. Labour Market Testing (LMT) must occur within 6 months prior to lodging the nomination.

Refer to page 11 of the Booklet 5 Employer Sponsored Migration for more information.
