Why Work at UNSW?

The University of New South Wales is recognised throughout the world as an important centre of learning with a reputation for excellence in research and teaching and a strong international profile. UNSW is a foundation member of the Group of Eight leading Australian universities and a member of Universitas 21, a consortium of the world's leading universities in Australia, Europe, America and Asia. UNSW is committed to innovative teaching methods using the latest technology and approaches to educational design.
 
Teaching and research are the core activities of UNSW, with over 600 degrees and diplomas at the undergraduate levels. Our courses are recognised world wide for their flexibility and diversity. The University has a student population of 40,007 with 8,115 international students and employs approximately 5,000 staff. It has over 90 exchange agreements, giving students the opportunity to study and learn around the world.
 
 
In addition, the University operates over 70 Centres and Institutes which provide specialised research and teaching. The University has forged successful research partnerships, including cross-disciplinary, cross-institution, business/industry and international partnerships. UNSW academics have established over 2000 research and academic links with colleagues around the world.
 
Location
The main campus of the University is located at Kensington, only seven kilometres from Sydney's central business district. UNSW also has campuses located in Randwick, Coogee, Paddington and Canberra, ACT. You can view maps of the various UNSW campuses.

Public Transport
UNSW is easily accessible from the city and many nearby seaside suburbs. It is serviced well in terms of public transport with buses departing to/from: Bondi Junction, Camperdown, Central Station, Circular Quay, Coogee, Glebe, Leichardt, Maroubra Beach, Maroubra Junction, Mascot, Newtown, Pagewood, Sans Souci, Surry Hills and Sydenham.
 
Onsite Car Parking
In addition, onsite parking is available for staff for a nominal fee.
 
Working Conditions
The University of New South Wales offers excellent conditions of employment.
 
Hours of work
Ordinary hours of work for most general staff are 35 hour per week (7 hours per day worked within the appropriate span of hours).
 
Flexi-time
Many parts of the University operate on flex-time which allows general staff, in consultation with the relevant supervisor, to vary start and finish times and to have a regular rostered day off.
 
Salary rates
The University offers very competitive salary rates for academic and general staff.
 
Salary Sacrificing
The University recognises the value of flexible remuneration planning for its staff by providing some salary sacrificing options including superannuation, motor vehicle leasing, child care and car parking. Salary sacrificing allows staff to restructure the way they receive their salary to suit individual needs and maximise take home pay.
 
Recreation and other types of leave
Both academic and general staff are entitled to:
  • 20 days of recreation leave (academic staff/general staff) per year. Further, staff receive an annual leave (bonus) payment equal to 17.5 per cent of salary for the period of leave accrued.
  • Three months of long service leave (academic staff/general staff) on full pay on completion of 10 years' service.
  • Generous sick leave and other leave entitlements (academic staff/general staff) including parental leave and carer's leave.
SSP or Sabbatical leave
In addition, academics are eligible for up to six months SSP leave upon completion of three years' of service which includes financial assistance:
  • payment of the staff member's airfare (maximum amount applies),
  • grant towards SSP living expenses and,
  • grant support for spouse and dependant child, for family members accompanying the staff member for six weeks or more.
All University staff receive 10 paid public holidays each year: New Year's Day, Australia Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, Queen's Birthday, Labour Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Public Holiday in place of the August Bank Holiday and two University Holidays.
 
Family Friendly Work Practices
UNSW has a number family friendly work practices in place to assist staff. These arrangements are designed to find the best possible match between the interests of the University and those of individual employees and can include: flex-time; permanent part time work; job sharing; provision of child care, recognition of carers' responsibilities and leave such as parental leave (academic staff/general staff) and carer's leave (academic staff/general staff).
 
Child Care
We have four Child Care Centres on or near the Kensington Campus. These Centres offer care for children aged from infancy to 5 years old and operate from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm for 49 weeks of the year.
 
Training Opportunities
The Organisation and Staff Development Services Unit provides training and development opportunities for UNSW staff by:
  • supporting staff in planning and developing their careers
  • offering training courses (in training and facilitation skills, recruitment and selection and other areas)
  • addressing the development needs of managers and academic leaders, and
  • providing opportunities for staff to network and learn from one another.
Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
The University offers a free, confidential counselling service to staff members and their families which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is provided by an external professional EAP organisation - Davidson Trahaire.
 
Workplace English Program
The University offers assistance for staff who would like to improve their English communication skills for the workplace. This is offered free to staff - more information can be found under the Workplace English Program.
 
Recreation Activities
The University offers extensive educational and recreational facilities in a modern, attractive environment. There are over a hundred clubs and societies, covering interests in the sporting, social, religious, hobby and intellectual fields. Among the sporting facilities is a 50 metre heated indoor pool of Olympic standard, squash and tennis courts and ovals.
 
Plays, concerts, films, recitals, and other cultural events are frequent. For those who wish to make use of these opportunities and facilities, they will find it a fascinating and stimulating experience.
 
Sports Facilities
The UNSW Sports Association offers a variety of sporting programs to members. These include Recreational courses, Social Sport, Intercollege and Intefaculty competitions. In addition, the Association runs numerous Sports Clubs and those interested in keeping fit can join the Unigym.
