Who Is A Casual Employee?

A casual employee is an employee engaged and paid by the hour. The University regularly engages casual employees to assist with peak work periods, temporary work assignments and where there is an irregular pattern of work. Examples include:
  • Engaging casual employees to work on an intensive fundraising drive for several weeks; and
  • Engaging casual employees to supplement student service areas during peak times of year (e.g. start of semester, enrolment times etc.).
This Procedure applies to the recruitment of all casual employees by UNSW for work opportunities of 1 week or longer, or where the initial opportunity may lead to further casual work. Where the casual work opportunity is less than 1 week, the relevant manager should still consider the requirements outlined below as being general principles or guidelines. Declaration and management of any conflict of interest is required in all circumstances.
